Uno’s Gluten-Free Pizza Fails to Impress

Uno Chicago Grill Pepperoni Pizza
First, kudos to Uno Chicago Grill for offering a gluten-free menu. They even serve Redbridge gluten-free beer! Woot! Woot!
That said, what a disappointment! I love Uno’s deep dish pizza, and I squealed, literally squealed, when I learned they now serve gluten-free pizza. I thought, This is going to be so gooood!! Surely a restaurant built on the foundation of delicious Chicago-style deep dish pizza will bring some gluten-freelicious Pizza Genius to the table! My expectations were high…so very high.
And, oh, how they fell.
The crust is bland, and not at all crisp as you would expect a thin crust pizza to be. In fact, it was so doughy, I wasn’t sure it was cooked all the way through. If, like my husband, you think the crust is just a vehicle for the sauce and cheese, you, too, would be unmoved. “Not enough sauce, not enough cheese.”
Our two boys enjoyed the night out and happily ate two or three pieces of pizza each without complaint. So, we’ll go back. Next time, however, we grownups will explore the rest of the gluten-free options.
What a bummer.
I have to say of all the GF pizza I have tried at resaurants, Uno’s is my least fav. Boston’s Gourmet & Z Pizza are much better.
That being said, if there isn’t another option, it is nice to have.

Kim, I agree, it was nice just to be able to take the kids out for pizza.
It doesn’t look like Boston’s Gourmet is in our area, but Z Pizza is! We haven’t eaten there before, so I’m anxious to try it out. Thanks for the recommendation!
you rock! loving the blog!!!
Thanks, Jenny!
I actually did a very similar post on my blog. The crust started to fall apart as it cooled and it was very very hard to swallow , it’s like it clung to my throat. Mine had just a thin smear of tomato paste on it and a very very small amount of cheese, no spices, no seasonings…nothing. The only thing that made it better was I was getting tipsy on Redbridge Beer (hadn’t had alcohol in a loooong time).
Hmmm. Sounds like a restaurant specific problem. Both your blog and this other hit my inbox together. The blog from Wisconsin Dells raved about the pizza. Here’s that link:

Tom, it’s unlikely it’s a restaurant specific problem, as the pizzas are made in a dedicated gluten-free warehouse and delivered frozen to Uno restaurants. http://www.unos.com/about/press/2009/0509_1.html
My review may have been more favorable if I, too, got to dive into that deep dish pizza I was craving! I think “My Gluten Free Kid” raves more about the experience than the actual gluten-free pizza. They were happy to be able to take their son out to dinner, stress-free. For that, I agree, Uno gets props.
If you get the opportunity, try it, and let me know what you think!
i have been in a gluten free diet ever since last year because i have food allergy.
Nice article on the subject. I am sharing this! ;~)
